Summary of The Nectar of Pain:

The Nectar of Pain by Najwa Zebian is a collection of poetry and prose which deals with topics of heartbreak, revival, self-esteem and strength of character. The book basically deals with lessons which come after a heartbreak.

Themes in The Nectar of Pain:

The Nectar of Pain deals with theme of self-love and heart break. The narrator thus keeps changing her tone from being strong to melancholic. On one hand, she refuses to take love which hurts her self-respect,

‘I do not want your

love

if you do not come

with it.’ (Zebian)

On the other hand, she accepts that she is still hurting from the rejection.

‘I crumble in the corner where

I once dreamt you’d hold me.

And I choke on the dust of the

Butterflies

That fell from my stomach for you.’ (Zebian)

The narrator is thus in a dilemma which is very natural to come after heartbreaks. This dilemma undoubtedly gives variety to her themes.

Style of The Nectar of Pain:

The poems are written in free style. Most of the poems do no follow a fixed rhyme scheme. However, the ideas are well merged within each line. Even though the book is supposed to be a collection of poetry and prose but it is hard to differentiate between the two. Zebain has adopted a similar pattern for her poems and prose which makes it hard for reader to distinguish one from the other.

Language Use in the book:

The language in The Nectar of Pain is very easy. There are no hard metaphors or tough rhetorical devices which cannot be considered strength of poetry collection. But it surely makes the book an easy read for everyone. The simplicity of language also gives a peculiar strength to the ideas. it shows that brevity is sometimes a better option. Some of the amazing lines are,

‘Some spend a lifetime

healing.

and some spend a lifetime

wanting to heal.’ (Zebian)

‘Once upon a mistake

I loved you and you loved me.’ (Zebian)

‘If it’s time that you want,

I will wait.

Just tell me that we will have someday

what we had one day.’ (Zebian)

However, at some points the language and ideas are so plain and simple that it sounds cliché.

‘What good do words do

when the action

has already been done?’ (Zebian)

Concluding Remarks:

The book is a good and easy read. It is emotional and has bleak ideas but it is surely less philosophical than many books of the present age. As the book majorly deals with heartbreak, there seems to be a repetition of themes in the book. However, it is surely worth reading.
